I've thought about the fact that the colors are caused by extremely trace elemental impurities, and this seems to make a significant difference in magickal qualities between a rose quartz and amethyst. I absolutely had not thought about the natural irradiation necessary to produce the purple coloring in the amethyst though.

About the trace elements, I would expect that this would change the basic crystal structure slightly and this would probably be enough to slightly alter the overall energetic effect caused by the stone, but I really don't think it is the energetic influence of the trace elements that is doing the influencing. I would think it's more the slight shift in crystal structure more than the actual effect of the element. So maybe the elements pull the basic quartz energy in one direction or the other. I'm sure that they all have some important base qualities. Just remember that the trace elements are only in quantities of around 1-20 parts per thousand most of the time. There's probably more dirt on the stone than there is trace element.

Now, as far as the irradiation goes, I'm not totally sure on how to interpret that because I've never thought about it before (which is silly...). Hmm....I'll have to get back to you on this one. Because I really can't think of what that would do. Do you happen to know of a list of stones/crystals that are naturally irradiated?

Really excellent comment.

You mentioned that the amethyst enhances your energy sense. May I add that, since Amethyst is the inclusion of iron and, some say, Aluminum, into an otherwise plain quartz crystal, perhaps you hold a stone of more than one material?

I could then assume that this specimen is not purple all the way through?

If it is not, then the clear quartz part of the stone would be what causes the heightened sense of energy.

Also, I am told (for I have never attempted it myself) that amethyst will turn yellow when heated (The stone called Citrine is also known as burnt amethyst.)

Have you yet examined such a stone? Do you think the properties would vary if the stone were freshly changed as opposed to having been found in such a state ("naturally formed" perhaps?).
