My problem does not lie with the fact that I can't wear my "magickal oil" shirt because most jobs should be separate from spiritual path. I'm saying that there are plenty of Christian and Jewish private schools where the admins and teachers can support their families on their paycheck. I'm frustrated by the fact that I couldn't be a paid minister for pagans (which the average salary is in the 50k range).

The world is full of places to fill your life with Christianity because the Christian community supports these spiritual workers. I know that we will more than likely continue to be a smaller community than the Christian ones but it seems as though every pagan position is held by a volunteer. Whether that's a teacher at cherry hill seminary (a graduate school for pagans) or the leader of a coven, they all seem to be unpaid positions which strongly limits the amount of time and energy the individual can put into the position.

Please excuse any typos, I'm currently on my phone.

I think one of the issues is that we are viewing a "pagan career" as being directly limited to and related to magick. If we were Christian and decided we wanted to do "God's work" we would either look for a limited income position within the church, or impose our spiritual views onto our current profession. And then we'd hang our sign out with a little fish symbol behind it so all the world would know we were making cloth diapers for God, or prescribing psychoactive drugs for God, or weightlifting for God.

The trouble I have run into personally is not so much that every career I would choose isn't directly related to being Pagan, but that every career I would choose that COULD be mystically motivated (but is mainstream) is limited by the common fear of Pagans. If we could all become public school teachers, aside from the intense limitations of that job that current public school practices create, and put our pentagram out to share that we were doing the work of the mystical soul, it would dramatically increase our ability to find meaningful work that validated who we want to be.

Not sure you would ever be able to wear your t-shirt that declares "Oil drilling for Magick" even if no one was bothered by it, but it's something to make you chuckle at least.

On the other hand, if we go beyond labels and the opportunity to be "out of the broom closet" while working, anything that relates to your archetypal role in your own beliefs could be a powerful and validating career that lent itself to being pagan in nature.

Different substances pose different risks. The naturally occurring tryptamines most often used as consciousness altering drugs during ritual (remember the shamans of old weren't synthesizing LSD, most drugs associated with magick/ritual use were easily extracted with water (ayahuasca or peyote brews,) combusted (health issues with inhaling ANY smoke but examples: tobacco, marijuana, some DMT containing plants,) or taken whole (mushrooms,) or straight to the blood such as frog poison rubbed in fresh wounds)are on the whole relatively safe on the physical side of things. The real danger is simply a perceived one: powerful psychedelic drugs reveal oneself to oneself. This can be frightening or depressing, it can also be joyous or awe-inspiring. Having the understanding that human nature is not always pleasant will help one sort through the dark and unpleasant realizations to further improve upon yourself. These drugs break down the barriers we build to protect ourselves emotionally, tearing them down without preparing first (which is largely where cleansing and meditation rituals preceding use such as in ayahuasca traditions come in) could, as I imagine, completely destroy some people mentally.

That's my two cents anyhow, I've always had an interest in shamanism, most of my knowledge on this subject comes from the perspective of a self-exploring spiritualist who happens to have a life-long obsession with neurotoxins, tryptamines, and other psychoactive compounds, mostly organic and naturally occurring ones at that.
